P.O.AR (Patchara + Ornnicha ARchitecture)
is research/design studio where traditional, local and modern architecture is combined. We believe that a design product should be accessible to everyone in order to bring about a positive change to the society.
Vows Villa has been designed with this in mind. The architecture includes six pavilions that can be customized to match the weather conditions and natural beauty of the surroundings. Each area offers a unique atmosphere, allowing couples to tailor their wedding experience to the time of day and specific weather conditions. Each area offers stunning views of the western horizon, but the atmosphere varies dramatically, making it possible to host unique events at different times of day.
The Potential of Wood
Given the need for the Vows Villa architecture to withstand varying weather conditions by the sea, we researched buildings that have proven durable in such environments. Our findings revealed that traditional wooden buildings—constructed with wedge-driven joints and without the use of metal components—are well-suited to coastal conditions, as they can withstand saltwater and strong winds.
We wanted to showcase the potential of wood in terms of durability, while also highlighting its inherent beauty. The structure uses reclaimed timber, aged over 40 years, that has been carefully sourced from an old school building being replaced with concrete construction due to current Thai regulations prohibiting large wooden structures. These reclaimed wooden beams will be used without the need for metal fasteners, employing traditional joinery techniques that ensure lasting durability.
The villa features two types of pavilions, both constructed from these resilient timbers, with a concrete marine-grade roof supported by the wooden structure. One pavilion includes a grass field for wedding ceremonies, while the other features a reflecting pool. Below these pavilions, there is additional space for indoor events. The timbers used will not warp, bend, or rot over time, ensuring the villa's longevity.
By blending traditional craftsmanship with modern engineering, Vows Villa creates a timeless, beautiful space that works harmoniously with both nature and modern design.
